Ross Crozier completed his PhD at Cornell under William L. Brown and then continued on to become a demonstrator in genetics at the University of Georgia. He returned to Australia as lecturer and rose to the title of professor at the University of New South Wales. In 1990, Crozier moved to La Trobe University as Chair of the Department of Genetics and Human Variation and moved to James Cook University in 2000 as Professor of Evolutionary Genetics in the School of Marine and Tropical Biology. His research centred around the study of social insects and social evolution and influenced the areas of evolutionary genetics and conservation biology. Ross used his background in population genetics and the molecular technique to help answer questions of social and evolutionary biology.
<p>Crozier's research efforts were embedded in the study of social insects and social evolution and influenced the areas of evolutionary genetics and conservation biology, and included a diversity of additional non-social taxa such as fig wasps, fish, crocodiles, birds, bats and octopus. With a strong background in population genetics and the theory underpinning this area, Ross used the newly developing molecular technique to help answer questions of social and evolutionary biology.</p>
<p>He authored and co-authored over 200 papers with up to 75 different colleagues.</p>
<p>He was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Ross was the first recipient of the Hamilton Award from the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI) and became the President of the society in 1998/1999.</p>
