James Barrie Kirkpatrick is a Professor of Geology at the University of Tasmania. His interest lies in integrating social and physical geography to solve problems in nature conservation. He is also an ecologist, having been president of both the Institute of Australian Geographers and the Ecological Society of Australia. His research and numerous publications have included the taxonomy and biogeography of eucalyptus, effects of fire and animals on vegetation and organic soils and landforms, and failures and successes in nature conservation. James Kirkpatrick has over 200 publications, a selection of which is listed here.
