He was considered highly progressive in his consistent early adoption and creation of new techniques, and was one of the first to farm wheat on the north-western slopes of New South Wales. His reputation grew such that he became the agricultural adviser on farm mechanization and machinery pools to the Federal minister for commerce and agriculture (1942-1945) as well as serving on the general council of the Wheat and Woolgrowers' Association of New South Wales and becoming a State delegate to the Australian Wool and Meat Producers' Federation.
