Leon Bren is an expert in the field of forest hydrology. Responsible for installing the Cropper Creek Hydrology Project in North-East Victoria, he continued to investigate aspects of the groundwater movement in the slopes of this area. Further investigations included the hydrology of riparian forests, the geometry of stream buffering systems, and the terminal lakes in the Wimmera River system. The Cropper Creek project is one of his continuing endeavours, as well as impact studies of riparian plantings on streamflow, and new mathematical approaches to measure the outflow of groundwater in mountain catchments.

Leon Bren has been teaching at the Department of Forestry and Ecoscience on the Creswick Campus of The University of Melbourne and in 2013 is a consultant in this field. He is a Board Member of the Bjarne K. Dahl Trust.
<p>Leon Bren's research interests include:<br />
- Water use of radiata pine<br />
- Ephemerality of small streams and impact of drought<br />
- Rehabilitation of river bank forests of degraded sites and recovery of hydraulic resistance to flow</p>
