Greg Hjorth was an internationally recognised mathematician, specialising in the field of set theory. Hjorth was 30 years old when his PhD thesis, completed in at the University of California, Berkeley, was awarded the Sacks Prize for the world's best mathematical logic thesis. One of the significant outcomes of his original work is what is now known as Hjorth's theory of turbulence. Hjorth held professorial positions at both Melbourne University and University of California Los Angeles.
