Briefly working as an exploration geologist in northern Australia and Sudan, in 1983 he commenced work at the National Herbarium of New South Wales, where he worked with Lawrie Johnson and Don Blaxell on the revision of the classification of eucalypts. Kenneth Hill published extensively on the systematics, ecology and biogeography of eucalypts, notably the bloodwoods (segregated as genus Corymbia), and cycads.

From 1997 to 1998 he held the position of Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, London. After his return to Australia, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney until his retirement in 2004. Using his highly developed computing skills, Kenneth Hill developed several original and innovative electronic products for the benefit of staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and the botanical and general community. He was also involved in the identification, naming, description and subsequent research on the Wollemi Pine. In collaboration with L.A.S. Johnson, he has described many more eucalypts than listed here.
