Some consider his pomological works more important than his botanical monographs. He described plants collected on the expedition of the Venus (1836-1839), the material collected being from the coast of Western Australia and the south coast of Australia. Several Australian plants were named in his honour, notably the desert sheoak Casuarina decaisneana F.Muell. (1858). Decaisne described many plant species in many genera, mostly not Australian.
