<biogHist>
The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, the successor of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, continues its work as a scientific institution, a place of education about plants, and a major open space for the city of Melbourne. Its constituent parts are: the National Herbarium of Victoria, one of Australia's principal scientific plant collections, where research is conducted on the Victorian and Australian floras; the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne which specialises in Australian plants; and the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology. With the passing of the <span style="font-style:italic">Royal Botanic Gardens Act 1991</span> the Gardens came under the administration of the Royal Botanic Gardens Board (with effect from 1 July 1992) as a statutory authority. In June 2015 the name was changed to Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Until 1991 the Director was concurrently the Victorian Government Botanist.
<p>The Gardens has been administered by these Victorian Government authorities:<br />
1958 - 1983 Department of Crown Lands and Survey<br />
1983 - 1990 Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands<br />
1990 - 1992 Department of Conservation and Environment<br />
1992 - Royal Botanic Gardens Board</p>
