Together they contain over 270,000 specimens with the emphasis being on the flora of the Northern Territory and Central Australia. In 1954, a Botany Section and Herbarium were established in Alice Springs, within the Animal Industry Branch of the Northern Territory Administration. George Chippendale was placed in charge of the existing small specimen collection. In 1966, the second Northern Territory herbarium was established in Darwin. Most of the specimens in Alice Springs were amalgamated with the Darwin collection in 1989 (although some of the more important material was later returned). The combined collections were relocated in 1997 to the Darwin suburb of Palmerston. Alice Springs retains a reference collection of arid zone species largely through the efforts of botanists David Albrecht and Peter Latz. The Herbarium is a member of the Council of the Heads of Australian Herbaria (CHAH), a collaborative association of Australia's principal herbaria, and contributes specimen information Australia's Virtual Herbarium (AVH), an initiative of CHAH.
