Hermann Hans Behr qualified as a doctor in Berlin in 1843 but travelled to Australia the year after to pursue his interest in anthropology, botany and entomology. From 1844 to 1845 and from 1848 to 1849 he lived in South Australia observing and documenting the culture of local Aboriginal nations, and collecting insect and plant specimens. He described many new insect species and most of his plant specimens were sent to and described by his friend Ferdinand Mueller. Behr later lived and worked in California and was involved in the introduction of Australian plants to that region. He described <span style="font-style:italic">Eucalyptus odorata</span> Behr (1847), and his name is commemorated in the Californian genus <span style="font-style:italic">Behria</span> (Liliaceae) and about 40 species of Australian plants. The National Herbarium of Victoria holds over 300 of Behr's specimens.
