In the 1980s he began researching the use of phosphine as an insecticide, engaging with the problem that phosphine is toxic to humans as well as insects. His work determining levels of toxicity resulted in a new method of phosphene fumigation which was named SIROFLO®. The technology quickly became the major grain 'protection' and disinfestation method used in both vertical silos and horizontal storages in Australia. SIROFLO® was successful in trials in 1983 and 1985 saw its first commercial installation.

In 1993 Winks was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for his contribution to the Australian grain industry.
