He was also instrumental in the initiation and establishing of the Australian National Beamline Facility (ANBF), situated at the Japanese synchrotron known as the Photon Factory. Wilkins published over 140 peer-refereed papers.

In 1998 Wilkins (with colleagues) was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for developments in hard X-ray phase contrast imaging.
