He worked at the CSIRO Division of Energy Technology for 22 years (1980 - 2003) where he rose to the position of Senior Principal Research Scientist. His interest in energy storage technology led him conceive, resource and steer the CSIRO Carbon Supercapacitor Project from 1994 to 2001. The research undertaken within this project was integral to the development of the supercapacitor energy storage incorporated in the CSIRO's Low Emissions Vehicles, produced in 2000. In 2008 Vassallo was named the inaugural Delta Electricity Chair in Sustainable Energy Development at the University of Sydney.

Vassallo was awarded the following CSIRO medals:

2000 - CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as joint team leader (with David Lamb and Howard Lovatt) of the Low Emission Vehicle Team, for the development of complete power-trains for two low-emission car projects.

2004 - CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement as joint Team Leader (with Calum Drummond) of the High Power Capacitor Team, for the development and assistance in the commercialisation of advanced high power small form factor supercapacitors for wireless communication products.
