James Tickner is a physicist who specialises in the creation of novel nuclear instruments with applications in the mineral industry, as well as in border security. After joining the CSIRO in 1998, he was involved in the development of the award-winning Air Cargo Scanner technology that allows for the rapid identification of contraband content within large air cargo with high precision measurement technology. During his Doctoral research and as a Post-doctoral fellow, he worked on the ZEUS experiment at Oxford University (1997).
<p>Tickner was awarded the following CSIRO medals:</p>
<p>2006 - CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement (with Nicholas Cutmore, Brian Sowerby, and colleagues) for developing a world-first air cargo scanner for interrogating consolidated air cargo for contraband such as drugs and explosives;</p>
<p>2021 - CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a member of the PhotonAssay Team (with Nicholas Cutmore and colleagues) for breakthrough innovation of photonassay technology delivering rapid, safe and accurate analysis of gold and other precious metals in mining applications and commercialisation for industry deployment through the start-up company, Chrysos.</p>
