His research interest lies in the relationships between gene and function and encompass the molecular events contributing to livestock production traits. He was significantly involved in the deciphering of the sheep and cattle genomes in 2009, a landmark achievement. Ross has published over 100 scientific articles. In 2014 Ross Tellam became a Member of the Order of Australia for services to science relating to field livestock productivity and sustainability.

In 2010 Tellam was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as team leader of the Livestock Genomics Team (with James Kijas, Brian Dalrymple, Bill Barendse and colleagues), for leading two international consortia and scientific contributions dedicated to decoding the genomes of cattle and sheep, positioning Australiaas a global leader in transforming animal agriculture.
