His research has resulted in novel processes and products that have allowed the Australian dairy industry to expand and evolve, including the development of dairy proteins and peptides isolates and resulting 'tailored' protein products.

In 2006 Smithers received CSIRO's Sir Ian McLennan Impact from Science and Engineering Award for his leadership in project partnerships which have resulted in several 'world-first' developments for the Australian dairy industry.
