Significantly, he published A new classification of the genus Eucalyptus L'Hér. (Myrtaceae) (2000), an entirely new classificatory system of the eucalypts. In this, he includes the subgenera Angophora and Corymbia, and five other subgenera, within a broadly-defined genus Eucalyptus.

Ian Brooker described 44 taxa of eucalypts and collaborated widely, jointly describing a further 171 together with Steve Hopper, later Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Brooker produced the interactive website EUCLID (Eucalypts of Australia). He also wrote the Field Guide to Eucalypts, vols. 1-3. In 1979 Alan Gray named the eucalyptus 'Brooker's Gum' as Eucalyptus brookerana in his honour. The taxonomy list included here only shows a fraction of the eucalypts named by Brooker.
