Prior to this, the successful classification of the group was widely considered impossible. He served as Chairman of the International Working Group on Tropical Virology and as a member of the International Working Group on Potyviruses, the International Working Group on Legume Viruses and the Working Group on Asia-Pacific Groundnut Viruses.

In 1994 Shukla was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence (jointly with Colin Ward) for their work on the structure, variation and taxonomy of the Potyviridae, the largest family of plant viruses.
