The program was developed to help architects, engineers, building surveyors and educators to understand and apply the Australian Building Code. BCAider was in use from 1992 to 2005. Sharpe was Chief Research Scientist and Program Manager of Construction Systems from 1992 to 2000.

In 1994 Sharpe was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for developing and commercialising BCaider an expert system for the Building Code of Australia.
