He joined the CSIRO Division of Oceanography in 1990 and has worked in subsequent Divisions since.

In 2021 Rintoul was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Lifetime Achievement for leadership in creating new knowledge about the role of the Southern Ocean in regional and global climate, including motivating international collaboration, inspiring early career researchers, and translating knowledge for policymakers. He has led the design, resourcing and implementation of major field programs including 16 research expeditions to the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
