In the late 1970s and 1980s he had a large part in the development of species specifically for the Australian climate, to compete with the other breeds available at the time that were mainly bred in the United States and were inappropriate and unsuccessful in Australian climatic conditions.

Reid received the following CSIRO awards:

2004 - Sir Ian McLennan Impact from Science and Engineering Award for his contributions to the cotton industry by the development of some specific and outstanding new varieties;

2011 - CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a member of the Cotton Breeding and Biotechnology Team (with Gregory Constable, Danny Llewellyn and colleagues) for the major impact achieved on Australia's cotton production due to the breeding and deployment of the new cotton variety Sicot71BRF.
