He began his career developing as part of a CSIRO team pioneering SIROFLOC water clarification system which led him to specialise in the area of urban water supply improvement. In 1995 Priestley initiated and succeeded in a bid to establish the first Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality & Treatment, which operated from 1995 to 2008. Priestley retired from the CSIRO in 2010 and returned as an Honorary Fellow to pursue his research into repurposing wastewater and other ways to achieve sustainable urban water supplies.

Priestley was awarded the following CSIRO medals:

1989 - CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement (with D. E. Weiss and colleagues) for development of the SIROFLOC process for preparation of potable water;

1999 - CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement (with Mat Ballard and coleagues) for the MIEX® project for purifying water.
