It was founded to co-ordinate and further the work of the existing state statistical societies, to establish a national publications, and to host conferences. The Society has state Branches and special interest groups. Awards given by the Society include the Pitman Medal and the Society Service Award. The Society is associated with other Australian statistical organisations, including the Australian Mathematics Science Institute and the National Committee for Mathematics of the Australian Academy of Science.

Australian journal of statistics (ISBN 0004-9581: vol. 1 (April 1959) - vol. 39(3) (December 1997). (This superceded the Bulletin published by the Statistical Society of New South Wales.); succeeded by
Australian and New Zealand journal of statistics (1467-842X: vol. 40(1) March 1998 - . (Published in two sections (Applications, and Theory and method) jointly with the New Zealand Statistical Association: continues the Australian journal of statistics and the New Zealand statistician.)
