He joined CSIRO in 1980, becoming and Business Director for CSIRO Land and Water in 2004. Among the projects managed by Meyer for CSIRO were: Crop- and Soil-water Studies; Water-table and Salinity Dynamics; and Sustainable Agriculture. Between 1994 and 1997 he was Foundation Professor of Irrigation at Charles Sturt University, a joint position with CSIRO Land and Water.
