As Senior Principal Research Scientist within the CSIRO's Division of Protein Chemistry, he was involved in the development of the infectious bursal disease virus vaccine, research on the footrot in sheep and the taxonomy of potyviruses.

McKern was awarded the following CSIRO medals:

1997 - CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a team member (under the leadership of Ahmed Azad, Kevin Fahey and Colin Ward) for their outstanding contributions to our knowledgeof the structure and biology of the Birnaviridae family of double-stranded RNA viruses;

2006 - CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a member of the team (with Michael Lawrence, Colin Ward, Lindsay Sparrow and colleagues) that determined the molecular structure of the human insulin receptor.
