<abstract>Sir Malcolm Kenneth McIntosh was Chief Executive of the CSIRO from 1996 to 2000. McIntosh was a qualified physicist and had worked in the public service since the 1970s. From 1991 to 1996 McIntosh held the position of Chief of Defence Procurement for the British Defence Department. His work in this post gained him a knighthood in 1996. McIntosh was made a Companion in the Order of Australia in 1999, in recognition of his work to develop the technological and scientific research sectors in Australia.</abstract>
