Since 1990 he has been leading research into the potential of chicken cytokines to be developed into a low impact poultry health product to reduce the poultry industry's reliance on antibiotics and chemicals. His research in this area has led to the development and commercialisation of chicken interferon gamma as a treatment to improve poultry's resistance to superbugs. For this research he was co-recipient of the 2002 CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement. In 2003 Lowenthal was also instrumental in the establishment of the Poultry CRC (Cooperative Research Centre).

In 2002 Lowenthal (with Mike Johnson and colleagues) was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for the development and commercialisation of a new health product for livestock aimed at reducing the need for antibiotics and chemicals.
