Michael Colin Lawrence is an internationally recognised expert in protein crystallography. He worked for close to 20 years within the CSIRO Division of Protein Chemistry, 10 of which he spent seconded to the Biomolecular Research Institute (BRI). In 2007 he resigned from the CSIRO and took up a position as Research Fellow at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. He was part of the CSIRO team that made the breakthrough identification of the structure of the insulin and epidermal growth factor receptors in 2006.
In 2006 Lawrence was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a member of the team (with Colin Ward, Lindsay Sparrow, Neil McKern and colleagues) that determined the molecular structure of the human insulin receptor.
