As a research scientist with the CSIRO Livestock Industries he has undertaken research on the identification of genes that produce superior livestock. He was an integral member of bovine and ovine genetic research team that was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal in 2010.

In 2010 Kijas was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as a member of the Livestock Genomics Team (with Ross Tellam, Brian Dalrymple, Bill Barendse and colleagues), for research with two international consortia and scientific contributions dedicated to decoding the genomes of cattle and sheep, positioning Australia as a global leader in transforming animal agriculture.
