Since 1989 he has been employed at the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory.

In 2002 Johnson (with John Lowenthal and colleagues) was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for the development and commercialisation of a new health product for livestock aimed at reducing the need for antibiotics and chemicals.
