Tom Hatton is an expert in water resource management. He has worked with the CSIRO for over 20 years on projects to do with salinity and tree water use and catchment management. He was notably involved in the Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields Project (2007-2008). In 2004 Hatton was appointed Director of the CSIRO's Water for a Healthy Country Flagship. His research into tree water use and allocation led to the development of the Greenspan sapflow meter, a tool which significantly improved the accuracy and ease with which tree water use was monitored. Hatton's work in this area helped to raise public awareness of the issue of salinisation. In 2009, Hatton became the Director of the CSIRO's Wealth From Oceans Flagship.
<p>In 2008 Hatton was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence as team leader (with William Young and colleagues) for research that has delivered the most comprehensive and complex whole-of-basin water assessment ever undertaken in Australia.</p>
