Thilak Gunatillake is an expert in biomedical materials development. He led the, design and development of the bio-compatible polyurethanes Elast-Eon™ and NovoSorb™. He was also involved in the development of the materials used in the world's first extended wear contact lenses. Gunatillake was a Senior Principal Research Scientist with the CSIRO Division of Molecular Science and CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies.
<p>Gunatillake received the following CSIRO awards:</p>
<p>2002 - Sir Ian McLennan Impact from Science and Engineering Award for his work on the design and synthesis of biostable polyurethanes for medical implants such as the Elast-EomTM family of polyurethanes, which has received international attention due to unique properties;</p>
<p>2005 - CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement (with colleagues) for the development of the novel family of biodegradable polymers for advanced biomedical and tissue engineering applications.</p>
