He has worked extensively on the genetic modification of cotton varieties, focusing particularly on their enhancement with proteins that are insecticidal to the Helicoverpa caterpillar. This work was done in collaboration with Dr Danny Llewellyn and Dr Greg Constable and received the CSIRO Chairman's Medal (2003) and the ATSE Clunies Ross Award (2006). In 2007 Dr Fitt was made Deputy Chief of the CSIRO Division of Entomology.
