He had previously been Chief of several divisions. In 1992 he jointly lead the CSIRO Division of Chemicals and Polymers research and development on supercapacitors. His research interests focus on advanced materials, energy storage and biomedical products, and the commercialisation of research outcomes.

In 2004 Drummond (as joint Team Leader withTony Vassall, and the High Power Capacitor Team) was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for the development and assistance in the commercialisation of advanced high power small form factor supercapacitors for wireless communication products.

"Calum Drummond has made outstanding contributions to advancing the fundamental understanding of key factors governing molecular assembly, as well as particle and surface interactions in liquids. A hallmark of his research has been the establishment of new molecular design rules, and the use of sophisticated high-throughput preparation and characterisation techniques to fast-track the creation of materials, and the determination of the structure and properties of materials, at the nanoscale.
