Her bioeconomic modelling allowed for the development of the prawn fishing industry in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Between 1996 and 1999, Dichmont worked at the Southern Fisheries Centre, Queensland Department of Primary Industries at Deception Bay. Dichmont joined the CSIRO in 1999 and by 2009 she was a Principal Research Scientist and Leader of the Resource Use and Conservation Stream at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.

In 2009 Dichmont (with colleagues in the Northern Fishery Bio-economic Team) was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for the development of a combined biological and economic model to guide the management of Australia's Northern Prawn Fishery in a way that ensures industry profitability and a vigorous fishery resource.
