He worked within the CSIRO for 27 years, first in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Chemistry, leading research in Metallurgical Chemistry and then in the Division of Chemical Engineering, where he oversaw the development of the SiroSmelt smelting system.

In 1990 Denholm received CSIRO's Sir Ian McLennan Impact from Science and Engineering Award for his contribution to the development of SIROSMELT, an environmentally friendly metal recovery process..
