He is known for developing new breeds of wheat that were designed to adapt to the previously un-profitable high rainfall zone. The new breeds, including the Lawson, Paterson, Gordon, Tennant, Brennan and Dennis varieties, were more resistant to diseases, including the previously devastating Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus.

In 1997 Davidson was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for his contributions to wheat breeding and agronomy.
