His major achievement was the DELTA software, a flexible data format, capable of representing most types of information used by taxonomists for description, identification, and classification of living organisms. DELTA was used worldwide from 1985 in taxonomic research and for teaching. Dallwitz presented numerous workshops on the use of DELTA. He left CSIRO in 2000 when DELTA was closed.

In 1996 Dallwitz was awarded the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement for his development of the DELTA taxonomic computer programs.
