In 1975 he became a Research Fellow at the Research School of Biological Sciences, Australian National University, before joining the CSIRO Division of Protein Chemistry (later Molecular Science) in 1980. During the next 12 years he worked on several major research projects. These included: cloning and sequencing the neuraminidase gene from an early (1957) strain of Asian influenza virus (with Colin Ward and Peter Ellman), and the gene segments of the UK strain of bovine rotavirus (with Ian Holmes, University of Mebourne); the genetic improvement of cheese starter strains (with Richard Yu, Gilbert Chandler Dairy Institute of Dairy Technology, Werribee, and Ron Hull, CSIRO Dairy Research Laboratory); and the structure and function of HIV regulatory proteins (while seconded to the Biomolecular Research Institute). Azad became Director of Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town, in 2000.

In 1997 Azad was awarded the CSIRO Chairman's Medal for Science and Engineering Excellence (as joint team leader with Kevin Fahey and Colin Ward) for their outstanding contributions to our knowledge of the structure and biology of the Birnaviridae family of double-stranded RNA viruses, leading to the development of a prototype recombinant vaccine against infectious bursal disease of poultry.
