<abstract>Arthur Max Allen was surveyor-general of New South Wales between 1937 and 1956.

During World War II he acted first as state survey liaison officer, coordinating the production of maps vital to military strategy and in 1942 was named deputy-director of survey at First Australian Army headquarters, Toowoomba, Queensland.</abstract>
