He was an innovative researcher into the petrographic structure of coals, cokes and carbons. His discoveries had a lasting impact on the development of techniques in manufacturing coals and in the conversion of coals to liquid fuels. In his research he published on the prediction of metallurgical coke properties, the classification of vitrinites, the origin of sclerotinite and micrinite, and cold-climate formation of Gondwana inertinite.
