During the time he spent on the Island he made a study of the indigenous people, and collected specimens of the local fauna and fauna. The plant specimens he sent to Frederick Bailey for identification. Having become registered as a pharmacist, he established his own business in central Brisbane. Watkins was a keen member of the Royal Society of Queensland, and particularly active in the Society's Field Naturalists' Section.
