William Fryar like many others of the colonial era had a highly varied career. Initially he worked as a licensed surveyor in Queensland and in 1874 joined the Queensland Legislative Assembly. In 1877 he resigned and returned to surveying and also took up a directorship with the <span style="font-style:italic">Queensland Evangelical Standard</span> newspaper. Fryer was later appointed the first Queensland inspector of mines.
