Ian Provan C. (Provan) Murray is known as the grandfather of Australian nuclear medicine. He arrived in Australia (1963) after studying and working in his hometown of Glasgow then in the United States of America. A qualified endocrinologist, Murray established at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney Australia's first department of nuclear medicine. He remained at the hospital until June 1994 and during this time was also Director and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales and ran his own private practice. Murray was world recognized leader in nuclear medicine, was Australia's representative at many international congresses and committees and was an active founding member of many Australian societies. He has received many honours including being appointed a Fellow of many societies and a Member in the Order of Australia (AM).
