<biogHist>
<abstract>James Desmond Smyth was the foundation Professor of Zoology at the Australian National University in Canberra (1959-1971). Prior to that he was Chair in Zoology at Canberra University College (1958-1960). He was of the first scientists to take up the study of parasites and authored over 100 scientific journal articles and six books on the topic. His book <span style="font-style:italic"> Introduction to Animal Parasitology</span> (1962) remained in continuous print for decades.</abstract>
