He wrote two highly successful books on orchids - The charm of growing orchids and Orchids, their culture and classification - and was made an honorary life member of the Orchid Society of New South Wales, The Sydney Orchid Society and the Australian Orchid Society. Gilbert's ornithological talents were equally impressive, especially his studies on bird behaviour. He was made an honorary member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) in 1958 after a fifty year association with them. Gilbert authored many important articles in Emu, the RAOU's scientific journal, and in other journals such as the Australian Zoologist.
