He spent most of his life studying and working at both the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney (1911-c.1941) and the University of Sydney (1912-1948). Maguire's service to these organisations was only disrupted by his involvement in both World Wars where he was posted to several field hospitals as well as in administration. Maguire began to specialise in gynaecology in the 1920s and his book Anatomy of the Female Pelvis (1922) became one of the most regarded female anatomy books, being reprinted a total of three times (1929, 1940, 1949). Kruse gained an international reputation for his work and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England, FRCS), the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS), the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FANZCR).
