Prior to joining the university he held prominent roles at both Monash University (Victoria) and the University of Tasmania. His research experience has been extensive, spanning topics in the fields of chemical physics, catalysis, coal chemistry, material and fuel science and he has (co)-authored over 200 publications. Larkins has also contributed to a great many areas outside of academia. He is presently Chair of both the National and International Synchrotron Scientific Advisory Committees and in the past has held similar and directorship roles in numerous other organisations. Only a few of these have been listed here. Throughout his career, Larkins has received many awards and honours including the Centenary Medal of Australia for services to science and education and was appointed a Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the development of research policy in Australia and the promotion of science and technology at state and national levels, and to education.
