He first came to the department in 1962 as a lecturer and some of his many achievements include the first direct measurements of basilar membrane motion in the living cochlea using the Mössbauer effect, and the measurement of the electrical properties of the cochlea using multi-electrode techniques. The Laboratory became recognised internationally as centre of inner ear research.
