His major research on how water moves and how substances disperse in stratified bodies of water has been world leading, and he has developed innovative instruments to detect these previously unknown phenomena. Imberger has been recognised internationally for this work, including being awarded the world's most prestigious water award, the Stockholm Water Prize. He is an avid environmentalist and is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Earthwatch.
